Cody Campbell registered 34 saves and Michael Parks registered the deciding marker as the Cedar Rapid RoughRiders outlasted the Omaha Lancers 3-2 in a shootout Saturday evening in front of 5,962 fans at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. Following the shootout defeat, the Lancers fell to 27-9-3 on the year but remain atop the West Division standings with 57 points.
Despite being outshot 16-4 in the opening frame, Cedar Rapids grabbed the only goal of period one when Jayson Megna’s left wing snap shot found daylight just under the crossbar of John Keeney giving the RoughRiders a 1-0 lead. Nick Lappin earned the only assist on the even strength marker netted 13:52 into the opening period of play.
Omaha evened the contest less than six minutes into the middle period when Erik Haula found a loose rebound at the outside of the goal crease in tapping home his 20th marker of the year. Matt White and Aaron Ave grabbed the two assists on Omaha’s league-leading 55th power play goal of the season. Cedar Rapids regained the lead with a power play goal of its own 9:23 into the period when Bryce Aneloski pounced on a rebound at the right wing for his 13th goal and team-leading 40th point of the year. Megna and Cason Hohmann assisted on the man advantage tally. The Lancers once again found a way to even the contest when, from behind the RoughRiders’ goal, Haula centered the puck to White who slammed home his league-leading 25th goal of the season. The equalizing tally came with just 2:28 left in period two.
After Omaha outshot Cedar Rapids 12-5 in the third period and subsequent overtime, the RoughRiders clipped the Lancers in the shootout with goals from Zach Lehrke, Cason Hohmann and Michael Parks. White and Troy Power scored for the Lancers but it wasn’t enough as Cody Campbell turned aside the other five Omaha skaters for the victory.
With the win, Campbell improved to 11-5 on the year and is now 2-1 against the Lancers having surrendered just three goals against in 185 minutes of hockey. John Keeney suffered the shootout loss after 14 saves on 16 Cedar Rapids shots.
The Lancers are back in action this Tuesday evening when they welcome the SIoux City Musketeers to the Omaha Civic Auditorium.
