Lincoln, NE -- The Lincoln Stars scored goals in each period as the Omaha Lancers tried to come back in the 3rd period in a 5-3 defeat Sunday afternoon at the Ice Box.
The Lancers opened up the scoring six minutes into the first period when Chris Lipe put one past goaltender Liam Murray. Lipe found the puck off of a deflection to put Omaha up 1-0 over Lincoln. Moments after, the Stars found the back of the net when Carter Long sniped the puck past Keegan Karki to even the score 1-1. Late into the 1st, Cole Krygier scored on the powerplay to put Lincoln up 2-1 over Omaha.
Twelve seconds into the second period, Gustaf Westlund put a goal on the board for Lincoln. Westlund didn’t let up through the period as he scored a second with four minutes left to put Lincoln up 4-1 over Omaha.
Omaha got going on offense in the third period. Marshall Rafai built up the momentum for the Lancers when he took the puck up the left-wing wall. From there, Rafai snapped a quick shot past the left shoulder of Murray. With momentum on their side, Omaha rallied to get on the board again with eight minutes left in the third period. Cole Gallant scored with an assist from Noah Cates with traffic in the slot to get Omaha within reach of coming back 3-4. With just two minutes left, Carter Long sealed the win for Lincoln with a breakaway goal and a final score of 5-3.
The Omaha Lancers will be attending the USHL Fall Classic next Thursday - Saturday in Pittsburgh, PA. Omaha plays three straight days in Pennsylvania with games at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex and the UMPC Dicks Sporting Goods Rink. The first game is Thursday, September 28th, puck drop is at 1 p.m. ET.
Omaha opens up regular season play Friday, October 6th against Tri-City at Ralston Arena.
