SIOUX FALLS, SD. – The Lancers made the midweek trek north to Sioux Falls to take on the Stampede for the final time in this regular season. The Lancers are 6-2 against the Stampede on the year, but with one more regulation win tonight, the Lancers would seal their spot in the 2022 Clark Cup Playoffs.
The Lancers started this one slow, being outshot 12-4 and being down 2-0 through the opening 20 minutes of play.
It all got started 8:42 into the first as Seth Bernard-Docker scored for the first time this season off a rebound as he beat Omaha goaltender, Kevin Pasche down low to take the 1-0 lead. Jaksen Panzer and Max Rud picked up assists on that one as they got the puck movement going while on the power-play.
Six minutes later, the Stampede struck again on the man-advantage, as Michael LaStarza got a redirect in down low off a shot from Maddox Fleming to give LaStarza his 12th goal of the year and take the 2-0 lead over the Lancers.
Omaha wanted the goal reviewed as LaStarza looked to be in the goal crease, but got turned down by head official, David Lilly.
The second period consisted of more offensive pressure by the Lancers as they put up 10 shots on goal, but still gave up two goals in the process.
It was a solid period for the first half, but then Sam Harris netted a one-timer off a pass from Will McDonough for his 11th of the season, and to give the Stampede a 3-0 lead.
That lead stood for just over six minutes until Jaksen Panzer netted his first goal of the season with Maddox Fleming and Michael Quinn on the assists. It was a pass through traffic from Fleming that made it’s way through to Panzer, who had the entire net to shoot at. Panzer was able to bury it to take the 4-0 lead that Sioux Falls took into the start of the third period.
The third period had a hot start for Omaha as they netted two goals in the first 1:32 to cut the lead in half.
Matt Romer snagged a puck off the skates of Max Rud in the neutral zone and led a fast break into the offensive end. Followed by a snapshot that beat Stampede goaltender, Noah Grannan over the short-side shoulder to make it a 4-1 game with 19:03 remaining.
Just under 40 seconds later, Tanner Rowe got a shot on goal that squeaked through the legs of Grannan which allowed Cade Ahrenholz to hammer it home to make it a 4-2 game with still 18:28 left to play. Vincent Salice picked up the secondary assist on that play as well.
The Lancers had a few other scoring chances, but the flame died out as Will McDonough netted a one-timer off a pass from Max Rud to extend the lead back to three goals and allow the Stampede to carry out a 5-2 victory.
With this loss the Lancers do not clinch a playoff spot as the playoff push continues into this weekend as they make the trip to the Viaero Center to take on the Tri-City storm back-to-back nights. Puck drops a 7:05 on Friday (3/25) and Saturday (3/26). Those games can be caught on HockeyTV and Mixlr.
