OMAHA, NE. - In the final series of the regular season, the Lancers kicked off a home-and-home against the Sioux City Musketeers at Liberty First Credit Union Arena.
With both teams having their playoff seedings clinched, there was not much to play for outside of treating them as warm-up games before the playoffs.
The opening part of the first period was controlled by the Musketeers as they lead in shots 5-1, eight minutes into the game.
Sioux City also found the back of the net first in this one off the stick of Ben Steeves, netting his 38th goal of the season off a pass from Bennett Schimek, giving the Musketeers the 1-0 lead through 20 minutes.
The Lancers bounced back in the later part of the period as they lined up scoring chance after scoring chance, but Sioux City goaltender, Axel Mangbo had all the answers, shutting down all eight shots he saw. Sending the Lancers to the locker room leading in shots, 8-7, but trailing on the scoreboard, 1-0.
The Lancers tied the game early in the second period as Evan Werner got the play going in the attacking zone, and found Tomas Trunda toward the slot.
It looked like a prime opportunity for Trunda to shoot, but he slipped a pass down low to Michael Cameron, who scored down low on Mangbo, tying the game 1-1 with 15:18 left in the second period.
It was a tie game until the closing two minutes of the second period, as Tabor Heaslip knocked in his 12th goal of the season off a fourth or fifth opportunity after hammering away at a loose puck. Giving the Musketeers the 2-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.
Sioux City got going early in the third period off a goal from Peteris Purmalis as he beat Omaha goaltender, Kevin Pasche top shelf after intercepting a pass from Luke Baker. Handing Purmalis his third goal of the year in unassisted form, pulling his team up by 3-1.
The final goal of the night was scored by Kirklan Irey making it a 4-1 game as Pasche got beat over the glove hand. Purmalis and Owen Fowler picked up assists on the goal as Sioux City skated off with the victory.
The Lancers will be back in action tomorrow (4/23) as they travel to Sioux City for the final game of the regular season before hosting round one of the playoffs in Omaha on April 25th. Puck is set to drop at 6:05PM CST. That game can be caught on HockeyTV and Mixlr.
