Cates Gets First of Season in Loss



Urbandale, IA – A fast start by their opponent doomed the Lancers once more as the Buccaneers skated out to a 3-0 lead before claiming a 6-1 victory over the Lancers on Friday.

Des Moines took the season series over the Lancers by a final tally of 8-0-0-1Ryan Keane made his third start in the last four games. Noah Cates netted his first goal of the season in the second period, the second of his USHL career.

Des Moines got on the board first in the opening frame. Just over halfway through the opening period Kobe Roth found a puck on the right side of the net and put a shot past Ryan Keane to take the initial lead. About a minute and 15 seconds later Matt Jones capitalized on the man-advantage for the Bucs. Jones sent a centering pass off the skates of a defender in front that found its way to the back of the net doubling the lead. With time winding down in the period the Bucs struck again. Matthew Hudie walked towards the net and snapped a wrist shot that deflected off the knob of Keane’s stick and into the goal. Des Moines skated into the first intermission with a 3-0 lead.

Noah Cates notched his first goal of the season at the 7:42 mark of the second period. On the power play Ben Lown broke into the zone on the right wing. Lown centered the puck to Noah Cates who redirected it past Jan Ruzicka for his first goal of the season. The Bucs found an answer before the end of the period though getting a tally from Brian Halonen to push the lead back to three goals.

In the third period the Des Moines power play would strike twice getting goals from David Keefer and Kobe Roth, pushing the final score to 6-1.

Omaha’s Ryan Keane made 26 saves on 32 shots in the loss. Omaha is back at home Saturday night against Dubuque.
