Youngstown, OH -- The Lancers headed east to take on the Youngstown Phantoms Thursday night. Thursday was the first time these two teams have faced off. The Lancers came into the matchup with a 28-11-2-1 record with a spot at first place in the USHL. Youngstown was coming in with a big sweep last weekend over the Waterloo Black Hawks. Omaha gave Vinnie Purpura the nod to play between the pipes.
The Lancers came out of the gate quick in the first period. Filip Suchy opened up the scoring just 1:45 in to beat Ivan Prosvetov. Noah Cates scored immediately after with an assist from Suchy and Gallant. Then on the power play, Brendan Furry got called with the goal off of a shot from Cole Gallant that hit bodies in front of the net. Ethan Price notched a goal too which forced the Phantoms to pull Prosvetov to bring out Wouter Peeters. Nearing the end of the first, Christian O’Neil found the back of the net on Peeters. Omaha ended the first period with a total of 10 shots on net and kept the 5-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Omaha did not let up in the second period. Jack Randl scored off of a one-time shot from the slot. Chase Brand also scored getting his first goal in the USHL. Omaha held the 7-0 lead going into the second intermission.
In the third period, Nick Perbix went top shelf to beat Peeters. The Phantoms got a goal late from Samuel Salonen. Omaha took the win 8-1.
Vinnie Purpura stopped 23 of the 24 shots that he faced.
The Lancers improve to 29-11-2-1 with 61 points. Omaha still sits atop of the USHL.
