Ralston, NE - The Omaha Lancers are proud to partner with the Fremont Flyers Youth Hockey Organization to present the inaugural Matt Thurber Memorial Tournament to take place in December of this year.
The tournament is set to take place on Friday, December 14th through Sunday, December 16th at local Omaha area rinks and Fremont’s Sinder Ice Arena. A portion of proceeds will go toward a fund for Matt Thurber’s daughter set up by the Lancers, which has raised over $25,000 to date.
For those unfamiliar with Matt Thurber, he was a native of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. He became a 3-year standout for the Lancers and centerpiece during the 2008 Clark Cup run. He sits 12th in all-time total points in the Lancers storied history, and 5th in assists. While going undrafted, he attended the University of Wisconsin for two years before finishing his collegiate career at Northern Michigan, compiling 62 points in 67 games for the Wildcats. His junior and college success earned him a professional contract with the ECHL’s, Bakersfield Condors. In the 2013-14 season, Matt notched an impressive 42 points in 55 regular season games to go along with another 4 playoff points in his first pro season. Unfortunately, Matt’s promising career that had just begun abruptly came to an end due to health circumstances.
Matt moved back to Omaha to start a family with his beloved wife. In his free time, he helped coach youth players in the Omaha community. He didn’t want money or recognition, he wanted to be around the game he loved and help kids see their potential both on and off the ice. On May 8th, 2018, Matt’s life was cut short at the age of 28. While Matt might not be with us anymore, he will forever live on with the Lancers organization and each and every kid he mentored with the Matt Thurber Memorial Tournament.

The Lancers would like to give a special thanks to the Fremont Flyers and their staff for their help in making this possible as well as the Omaha Hockey Club, who Matt spent countless hours helping kids live their dream every day. We look forward to welcoming teams from across the state, region, and even country as we honor Matt’s lasting legacy in the hockey community. Merchandise will be on sale soon, a portion of proceeds also going to Matt’s fund. Merchandise is available to fans, participating teams, or anyone wanting to help the cause.
