RALSTON, NE - The Omaha Lancers have named forward Brendan Furry team captain for the 2018-19 season. The marks the first time under the David Wilkie era that a captain has been named before the start of the season.
“Brendan Furry personifies what an Omaha Lancer is,” Head Coach David Wilkie said.
Furry, 20, had a breakout season with the Lancers in 2017-18, recording 17 goals and 23 assists for 40 points in 59 games played. He also shined in the postseason tallying 2 goals and 1 assist for 3 points in 4 games played.
The 6-foot-1, 200-pound left winger grabbed the leagues attention when he went on an 11-point streak in 8 consecutive games.
“He is obviously an outstanding hockey player but he is also selfless, hard-working, has an engaging personality and does things the right way on and off the ice,” Wilkie said.
“It’s an unbelievable honor to be able to accept that role and to lead these guys, there have been great leaders here in the past year, so, I plan to live up to what they’ve set the standard at,” Brendan Furry said.
During Furry’s first season in the USHL (2017-18) the Niagara University commit did not wear a letter on his chest. Which gave him the opportunity to learn to be a leader from afar. In fact, in Brendan's entire hockey career he has never worn the “C” on his chest, which is why this means even that much more to him.
“You sit back as a newcomer to the team and you learn and watch your leaders. Even though you don't have that letter, it doesn't mean you can't be a leader. So, you just live and you play the game every day. You show up the rink ready to go and you do the little things that a leader would do. So taking a role, it’s a big role, I think I learned a lot from our leaders last year and our coaching staff, they’ve put a lot of trust in me. I think I can live up to their expectations,” Furry said.
“He will do a terrific job as captain of this years team.” WILKIE
